The role of learning types in SHRIMP

In order to customize SHRIMP according to our students’ needs and to personalize the platform as well as possible, we try to determine the individual learning type of each user with a short test at the beginning of each semester. We distinguish between four learning types:

Communicator: Communicators are particularly fond of communicating with people. If they have to prepare for a seminar or an exam, it helps them immensely to speak about questions and matters of content with other people. Holding presentations is fun to them most of the time. In general, they prefer working in communication with others.

Annotator: Annotators like to take written notes while reading a text for a seminar. It is particularly helpful for them to underline and highlight words or paragraphs in a text. In general, they likely prefer working visually.

Explorer: For an explorer, discovering and browsing are most important in the acquisition of knowledge. They give preference to skim-reading texts. Moreover, they like to consult multiple texts or internet links at the same time. In general, they prefer learning or working in an explorative way.

Reader: Eager Readers favor focusing on written material. They enjoy reading, and they are able to piece together complex matters by studying them. To prepare, the like creating their own summaries of texts or write down important points to remember. They like contemplative, focused work.

Of course, not every user can be assigned 100 percent to a single type of learner, so it makes sense for us to determine at least the primary and secondary learning type of each user. Therefore, starting this year, students had to mark two possible answers in the initial test. In this way, we hope to be able to respond even better to the learning needs of the students. We have already determined the distribution of learning types in this semester, a blog article with some statistics will be published shortly... Stay tuned!
